Dr. Shishir Shakya named AIM-AHEAD fellow, economics and AI

Dr. Shishir Shakya was recently appointed as a Research Fellow in the NIH‑funded AIM‑AHEAD Bridge2AI program, developing agentic artificial intelligence (AI) systems for clinical care and health equity research.

Working with a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, nurses, dentists, biomedical scientists, statisticians, computer scientists, and economists, Shakya's work pushes the frontier of AI applications in healthcare.

At Appalachian State University, Shakya leads the Walker College of Business AI Working Group, coordinating faculty across departments to develop the WCOB AI Impact Statement and guiding principles for artificial intelligence in teaching and research.

Shakya has recently published research in six peer‑reviewed journals spanning healthcare policy and regulatory and institutional economics, with publications in Nature, The Journal of Rural Health, Journal of Substance Use and Addiction Treatment, Journal of Labor Research, Journal of Institutional Economics, and Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization.
