Economics Department releases student newsletter

The Department of Economics at Appalachian State University has released a newsletter for its majors and minors. 

The newsletter includes highlights about economics students, faculty, and alumni, including the following.

Alumni Spotlights

  • Mallory Vannoy Philips '18 recently published an article in Forest Policy & Economics, a valuation study of river riparian buffers along the New and Watauga Rivers.
  • Antoni Marvin '23, who interned with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) in Asheville, will join Wake Forest University’s Business Analytics MBA.
  • Sarah Brodin '22 recently published a paper in the Journal of Environmental Management on the distributional impacts of toxic chemical facilities.

Faculty Spotlights

  • Dr. Shishir Shakya presented his research “The impact of repealing Certificate-of-Need laws on healthcare spending: A causal analysis” as part of the 2024-25 Research and Creative Activity event.
  • Dr. Denny Guignet is working with students on research projects through App State’s Graduate Research Assistant Mentee (GRAM) program.
  • Dr. Ash Morgan leads the App State chapter of the National Association of Business Economists.

Student Spotlights

  • Enzo Ramos is a Chancellor’s Scholar, App State's most competitive, merit-based scholarship.
  • Grace Houle was recently accepted into the Holland Fellows Program and was selected as a student to participate in the 2025 GreenBiz conference in Phoenix, AZ
