World-renowned economist, author and thought leader Dr. Jeffrey Sachs spoke to the Appalachian State University community onTuesday, March 30, 2021.

The virtual event was co-presented by Business for Good and the Global Opportunities Conference, and co-supported by the Walker College of Business and its Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the Department of Economics, the Beaver College of Health Sciences, and Appalachian’s Office of Sustainability.

It featured a lecture by Dr. Sachs about A Sustainable Development Strategy to Reunite the United States.

Global Visionary Award

Before Dr. Sachs’ lecture, Dr. Martin Meznar presented to him Appalachian’s Global Visionary Award in recognition of his bold efforts to make the world healthy, civil, equitable and sustainable. Dr. Meznar is associate dean for global and civic engagement in the Walker College of Business. 

The award had only been presented once before, in 2019 to Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Kailash Satyarthi when he visited Appalachian’s campus to speak as the 61st Boyles Distinguished Lecturer and the 11th annual Global Opportunities Conference keynote speaker.
